{"id":14,"date":"2012-09-23T23:05:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-23T23:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mother-natures-son.com\/blog\/?p=14"},"modified":"2012-12-23T14:39:47","modified_gmt":"2012-12-23T20:39:47","slug":"croton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atp.dtn.temporary.site\/blog\/croton\/","title":{"rendered":"Croton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s croton, not crouton!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m talking about a small plant, only about 1 foot tall. We&#8217;ve always seen it on our property, but this year &#8211; what I&#8217;m starting to call &#8220;<i>The Year That Everything Came In Waves<\/i>&#8220;, it has taken over huge swaths of land.<\/p>\n<p>I thought this was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=CRTE4\">Texas Croton<\/a> (<i>Croton texensis<\/i>), but close examination of the photos at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/\">Wildflower Center<\/a> say it&#8217;s something else.<\/p>\n<p>I poked around and think what we have is actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=CRMO6\">One-seed Croton<\/a> (<i>Croton monanthogynus<\/i>). The leaves, color, and size of the plant are all a match.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an overview shot, showing it covering the ground quite thickly.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-HJCZsAbsuos\/UF-ULUP1S-I\/AAAAAAAABwA\/xlw1KQyWoG8\/s1600\/croton_1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-HJCZsAbsuos\/UF-ULUP1S-I\/AAAAAAAABwA\/xlw1KQyWoG8\/s400\/croton_1.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close-up of a single plant so you get a better idea of the appearance. They look like miniature trees. They have woody trunks and a small canopy of leaves.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-KQuiyrT2hes\/UF-UNTHjX8I\/AAAAAAAABwI\/gZ53q6Khuv0\/s1600\/croton_2.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-KQuiyrT2hes\/UF-UNTHjX8I\/AAAAAAAABwI\/gZ53q6Khuv0\/s400\/croton_2.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Finally, here&#8217;s a photo of a small clump of crotons. As you can see the canopies merge together and actually form a dense cover. I heard our county agriculture agent say that young quail will hide from hawks under the crotons.
