I went to Spring Lake<\/a> in San Marcos<\/a> today. The lake is formed by a dam near the beginning of the San Marcos River. The river’s source is the San Marcos Springs which are the second largest cluster of springs in Texas. It’s a beautiful place near downtown San Marcos and Texas State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The San Marcos Springs have never been known to stop running and they are believed to be the oldest continually inhabited place in North America.<\/p>\n

The water is extremely clear and I took this photo of the rocky lake bottom. The water appears to be a few feet deep. I didn’t intend it, but this photo looks like an impressionist painting, and I’m pleased with the result.<\/p>\n

Here’s a view from one end of the lake across the width to the other shore. You can see the glass-bottom tour boats which have been conducting tours for 60 years.<\/p>\n

This is a magnificent Bald Cypress tree<\/a>\u00a0(Taxodium distichum<\/em>) near the lake. It’s not actually growing into the water as\u00a0many cypress trees do, but it’s pretty near. I think it’s at least 60 feet tall.<\/p>\n

Some of the cypress trees had seeds so I had to get a shot of them. They’re actually cones as you might expect, but they’re round not cone-shaped.<\/p>\n
